Tarocchi di Linus

Creator(s): Nicola Falcioni
Date: 1966
Country: Italy
Publisher: Baldini & Castoldi
Number of Cards: 24
ISBN:
Type: Marseilles

Reference:

Notes:
The cards were an add-on in the issue 3 (12) anno II 1966 of the Italian comics magazine linus . It was the first Italian comics magazine which featured stories for adults.

linus had a leftist cultural stance and it's editorial supported the Italian Communist Party. From the magazine's beginning, the comics section was accompanied by an extensive section dealing with society, politics, mass media, literature and other cultural themes. Among others Umberto Eco and Enzo Baldoni, the Italian journalist and writer killed in Iraq in 2004, worked for linus.

The cards came as an uncut fold-out sheet in the comics magazine. It's 24 cards, 20 of them majors and 4 aces for the 4 suits named coppe, spade, bastoni, denari. On most of the majors the traditional Tarot Marseilles imagery is recognizable and they have the traditional names. There are no cards for Magician, Justice and Chariot, but there is an aditional card "Il Fiore" (the flower) . The cards are non-traditional renumbered.  Instead of an lwb there is a page with interpretations for the cards in the magazine. I don't know if a complete tarot deck of these exists or if they are to find only in this comics magazine.

Tarot de Louttre B

Creator(s): Marc-Antoine Bissiere
Date: 1981
Country: France

Publisher: Grimaud
Number of Cards: 78
ISBN:

Type: Marseilles
Reference:
Encyclopedia of Tarot, vol. III, pp.320, 323

Notes:
Louttre B is the pseudonym of the French painter Marc-Antoine Bissiere (1926-2012). The deck was published in 1981 by Musee des Arts Decoratifs in cooperation with Grimaud on the opening of an exhibition called "Antique Playing Cards - A Collectors Dream". The cards originally were part of a book called "Le Tarot des familles", which was printed in a limited edition of only 75 copies. The book contains hand painted engravings of the cards with explanations.

The deck shows no human figures, but only the objects taken from Tarot de Marseilles. The images of this deck play with symmetry in various aspects. The three cards, where the symmetry of Roman numbers allows it, have mirror-inverted images. That leads to the first impression, that both The Emperor and The Lovers have number VI and Sun and Fool both have number XXI.

La Force (Strength) has no explicit number, but the number XI is part of the image.

Card titles are in French. The suits are d'Epee, Baton, Coupe, and Deniers. The courts are Valet, Cavalier, Reine, and Roi.  The backs are reversible. The 78 cards plus titlecard and a French only lwb came in a lidded cardboard box.

Le Tarot du Chien

Creator(s): Carole Sedillot, Claude Trapet
Date: 2002

Country: France
Publisher: De Vecchi
Number of Cards: 78
ISBN: 2-7328-3380-0
Type: Marseilles
Reference: tarotpassages

Notes:
Carole Sedillot has written on alchemy and Jungian psychology as well as on tarot. She and Trapet already collaborated in 1989 to produce their first edition of the Tarot du Chat.

The deck features various dog breeds on the major arcana and court cards. Pip cards are decorated with dog symbols.

The suits are color coded.  Wands are yellow with red flames for fire. Cups are pink, with water bowls, swords are light blue and discs are yellow with a floral design.

Sedillot doesn't merely intend to create an art deck with a cute substitution of canine figures. As she states in her book, her intent is to present the concept of the dog as the constant companion on the Fool’s journey. To accomplish this, she has cast the canine as the central figure of the cards, presented to the Fool in order to assist, teach and enlighten him as he proceeds on his journey.

The art is pen drawings with coloured pencil. The deck came with a book in French only.

The first edition was published by Noeme in 1992.

Le Tarot du Chat

Creator(s): Carole Sedillot, Claude Trapet
Date: 1993

Country: France
Publisher: Jacques Grancher
Number of Cards: 78
ISBN: 2-733-90415-9
Type: Marseilles
Reference: aeclectic

Notes:
The Major Arcana and Court Cards have cats that are anthromorphised while the Pips are regular cats. Baton (Wands ) show scenes of a Siamese type cat with flaming torches. Denier ( Coins) are depicted with scenes of a gray and brown Tabby Cat and the coins are actually flowers. Coupes (Cups) show a white Persian type of cat near a pool of water . L’ Epee (Swords) depict a gray cat with swords and the “blade” is a gray cat paw with the claws .

The general style is more Marseille than Waite-Smith. The art is pen drawings with coloured pencil. The backs are solid purple. The cards are shrinkwrapped (no box) and came with a softcover instruction book (text in French only).

There was an earlier Majors only edition published by Editions Jean Boully in 1989.

Tarocco Di Marsiglia (Svizzera 1804)

Creator(s): Jean Proche
Date: 1804* reproduction ?
Country: Switzerland, Italy
Publisher: Il Meneghello
Number of Cards: 78
ISBN:
Type: Marseilles
Reference: Tarotgarden

Notes:
The Marseilles pattern was produced not only in France but also in Fribourg and Neuchatel, Switzerland. This is a reproduction of the Swiss Marselles-pattern Tarot deck that was originally printed in Switzerland in 1804. It is an intermediate in style between the Marseilles and the Besancon patterns. This deck is an ancestor of those by Gassmann and Müller ("Tarot Classic").

One theory on the creator of this deck is, that the deck that had a second engraver engraving over the original. The signiature of the original creator on the Two of Coins was scratched out and another name put on instead on La Force and Le Diable. On La Force and Le Diable we can read "Engraved by Jean Proche", on Le Charior we found "J R", also on the Two of Coupes and the Four of Deniers. On the Two of Deniers the name of the supposed original cardmaker is mostly erased. "FAIT PAR JACQUE ROCHIAS FILS A NEUCHATEL" is a clear possibility.

The Hanged Man is similar to the Hanged Man from the Catelin Geofroy deck made in Lyon in 1557. The deck has a mis-titled card: The Cavallier De Coupe is actually the Knight of Pentacles. On L Empereur is the coat of arms of the principality of Neuchâtel.

The deck is republished by Il Meneghello in a limited edition of 2000 copies. It comes in a sturdy box with a lift-off lid and a wax seal. Mine is number 284.

Basque Country Tarot (Tarot de Euskalherria)

Creator(s): Alfredo Fermin Cemillan, Maritxu Erlanz de Güler
Date: 1991
Country: Spain
Publisher:
Heraclio Fournier
Number of Cards:
78
ISBN:

Type:
Marseilles
Reference:
Encyclopedia of Tarot, vol. IV, pp. 241

Notes:
The Tarot de Euskalherria (Basque Country Tarot) was commissioned by publisher Fournier to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Fournier Museum of Cards. Under the direction of Marixtu Erlanz de Güler, artist Alfredo Fermin Cemillan painted the deck.

The Major Arcana retain the traditional names with the exception of the Hierophant, who is the High Priest. The Majors have the names written on the bottoms in Spanish, Basque and English. Death is unnamed and the Fool is unnumbered. The Majors also have astrological symbols, but they do not correspond to the Golden Dawn assignments. The Court Cards do not have names written on them. The suits are, according to lwb,  Cups, Swords, Pentacles and Rods, and the courts King, Queen, Knight and Jack. The Minor Arcana pips include flora of the Basque region and plants reputed to have magical properties, including mandragora and belladonna.

The art is watercolor. The deck includes two presentation cards and came with a  lwb, which  provides information in Spanish, English, French and German.

Stone Tarot

Creator(s): Alison Stone
Date: 2000
Country: USA
Publisher: self-published
Number of Cards: 78+1
ISBN:
Type: Marseilles
Reference:
Encyclopedia of Tarot, vol. IV, pp. 176, 177

Notes:
Alison Stone is a poet, artist, and Wiccan High Priestess. The cards in the Stone Tarot Deck are reproduced from original oil paintings by Alison Stone and the deck is distributed through her web site.

Most of the trumps are based on Italian or Marseilles designs, without occult details such as in the Waite and Crowley decks. The numeric cards are pips, illustrated using arrangements of the four suit symbols.

The deck follows the classical tarot naming and numbering tradition with one minor variation; it is gender balanced. For two of the Minor Arcana suits, the Page is a male and the rider on the horse is a female (Amazon). For the other two suits, the Page is a female and the rider is a male (Knight). The deck has an additional blank card for those who incorporate that into their readings.

The sheet that comes with the deck has very little background information,  it only offers brief interpretations for every card.
