Tarot as Muse

Creator(s): Collaboration
Date: 2012
Country: USA
Publisher: self-published
Number of Cards: 22
ISBN:
Type: Other
Reference: artist's page

Notes:
Tarot as a Muse is a fund raiser for Ink People Center for the Arts, conceived by Kathryne DeLorme, Carolyn Ayres and Libby Maynard. Each artist chose their card sight unseen from the 22 Majors, so one can say that the card chose them. Each artist then received a Tarot reading about why this archetype chose them and then took their "muse" back to their respective studios to see what would emerge. In July of 2012 there was an exhibition of all 22 paintings.

The cards are oversized ( 6.75 inches x 4.5 inches ). The backs have a reversible, black and white pattern. Strength is 8, Justice is 11. The cards came in a red paper envelope accompanied by a 28 page explamatory booklet.

Lowbrow Tarot

Number of Cards: 22
ISBN: 978-0-7643-4235-6

Notes:
The Lowbrow Tarot is documenting a 2010 Los Angeles gallery show that brought together 23 pop-surrealist artists, each interpreting one of the Major Arcana (the 23rd artist did the back design). A list of the artist can be found here.

The lowbrow aesthetic — too ubiquitous now to be properly called a movement, and too wide-ranging to be properly called a school, popularized by painter/publisher Robert Williams and his journal Juxtapoz is inspired by Dali and Margritte.

In the LWB a full page  image is shown of each card with meaning and  reversed meaning. Each artist’s website is given at the bottom of the page.

The Stuckist Tarot

Creator(s): Elsa Dax, Ella Guru
Date: 2012
Country: United Kingdom

Publisher: self-published
Number of Cards: 22
ISBN:

Type: RWS
Reference: artist's page

Notes:
Stuckism is an art movement founded by 12 artists in London and Kent, England in 1999. Their aim was to advance new figurative painting  in opposition to the “conceptual” art. By 2012 the group had grown to an international art movement with over 200 groups in 50 countries.

Ella Guru writes:
"I replaced the wand in the magician’s hand with a whip because my model, a real magician named Paul Nathan of San Francisco, is an expert at whip-cracking. He can pull a playing card out of your mouth with the crack of a bullwhip 10 meters away. And he likes to play with fire. "

Annie Zamero writes:
"The Hermit’ Major Arcana is about seeking the truth,
so I have chosen Rupert Murdoch as my study because
he represents the antithesis of someone interested in the truth.
His Media Corporation has a history of manipulating the truth to suit
commercial purposes and maximize profits. "

Regretsy Tarot

Creator(s): April's Army Artist Collective
Date:
2011
Country: USA
Publisher:
Moon & Star
Number of Cards:
79
ISBN:

Type:
RWS
Reference:
Caboosterkit

Notes:
This deck is being designed by 25 Regretsy fans and artists all over the world, who call themselves 'April's Army'. Regretsy is an online community created by April Winchell that parodies the handmade crafts that are shown on Etsy.

The Regretsy Tarot is a limited-edition tarot deck of 1200 copies. The 79-card deck follows the RWS pattern and is divided up into major and minor arcana. The cards depict the vocabulary and culture of Regretsy. The suits are Tools, Genitalia, WTF, and Whimsicles (F*ckery). "Whimsical" is often spelled wrong on Etsy, so that particular typo has become a running joke amongst Regretsians.

Both the majors and minors give a title for each card as well as the promotional information for the artist who designed the card. The deck comes with an extra card called "Towel Mike".

The backs of the cards appear from a distance like black and white diamond and square patterns with a flower image in the center. On a closer look they are human genitalia, a circle of penises surrounds a circle of vaginas.

In the Regretsy Tarot, the major arcana cards represent people and things of special significance to the Regretsy community. The Majors have been renamed as follows:

The Fool
The Cupcake

Justice
Judge Judy
The Magician
Sir Flounce of the Forest

The Hanged Man
